Gangtok was once a small hamlet, but its importance grew rapidly as a major Buddhist center with the establishment of the Enchey Monastery in the 1840s. Later, the city became the administrative capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim.
After Sikkim officially became a part of India in 1975, Gangtok developed into a modern hill city with improved roads, tourism facilities, and cultural institutions. Today, it stands as Sikkim’s cultural, economic, and tourism hub.
