The history of Rumtek Monastery dates back to the 16th century when it was
originally built by the 9th Karmapa. However, the structure remained in
ruins for several centuries until it was reconstructed in the 1960s by the
16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje.
The rebuilt monastery was designed to replicate the original Kagyu
headquarters in Tibet. Today, Rumtek Monastery houses ancient manuscripts,
Buddhist relics, rare artworks, sacred texts, and traditional Buddhist
instruments. It also hosts various rituals, ceremonies, and the famous
annual Kagyu dance festival.
