About Seven Sister Waterfalls Sikkim

The waterfall is fed by mountain springs originating from the high ridges above. The water plunges across seven distinct rock terraces before passing beneath a bridge on the highway and flowing down toward the Teesta River basin. While the lower three to four stages are readily visible from the road, a climb up the footbridge and dedicated pathways allows visitors to view the higher cascade levels. The Sikkim Tourism Department has developed viewing kiosks, seating areas, and washroom facilities here to accommodate travelers.

Top Highlights at Seven Sister Waterfalls

1. The Multi-Tiered Waterfall View
Standing near the base allows you to feel the cold glacial spray directly on your face. The continuous roar of water plunging down the black rocks against a backdrop of hanging ferns creates an immersive natural soundscape and a picturesque photography backdrop.
2. Footbridge & Upper Viewpoint Deck
A well-maintained pedestrian bridge and a small flight of stairs lead to an elevated viewing pavilion. From this elevated platform, travelers gain a broader perspective of the higher tiers that remain hidden from vehicular road level.
3. Highway Cafeteria & Local Refreshments
Adjacent to the viewpoint sits a roadside tourism cafeteria and small local stalls. It is the customary place for northbound tourists to stop for hot tea, fresh momos, and spicy mountain noodles while taking in the forested mountain valley views.

Travel Tips & Best Time to Visit

Monsoon & Post-Monsoon (July to October): This is the prime time to see the falls in their full fury. The rainwater swells the stream, creating a roaring torrent of white water.

Spring & Autumn (March to May / November): Offers sunny skies, clear photography lighting, and pleasant temperatures (12°C to 20°C). While the volume of water is more moderate than in monsoon, the surrounding valleys and skies remain crystal clear.

Travel Advice:
  • ✯ Wear shoes with reliable traction; stone steps and walkways around the spray zone can remain damp and slick.
  • ✯ Keep a waterproof cover for cameras or smartphones when taking close-up pictures near the lower base pool.
  • ✯ You do not need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) merely to visit Seven Sister Waterfalls from Gangtok, making it suitable for a swift half-day excursion.
